The spotlight will be on Japanese designers at Pitti Uomo 93. The Florentine menswear trade show announced this week that UNDERCOVER and TAKAHIROMIYASHITATheSoloist will present their Fall 2018 collections at Pitti Uomo on Thursday, January 11, 2018, marking the first time designers Jun Takahashi and Takahiro Miyashita will hold back-to-back runway shows.

Only four years apart in age, Takahashi and Miyashita are “great friends,” according to Pitti Immagine Director of Communications and Events Lapo Cianchi, and their respective presentations at Pitti Uomo “will serve as a symbolic expression of not only their friendship, but also of the mutual respect for one another’s work.”

“We believe that, independently of each other, Takahashi and Miyashita – with their personal inspiration, design, styling, and uncompromising production methods – are extraordinary figures on the contemporary fashion scene,” said Cianchi. “We are very happy to provide a platform for expressing their longstanding friendship that stems from their shared cultural and social backgrounds, starting from Tokyo’s street punk scene and a passion for music.”

Takahashi

Born in Kiryu, Japan in September 1969, Takahashi founded UNDERCOVER while at Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo. The designer partnered with Nigo of A Bathing Ape to open Nowhere, one of the iconic stores to open in Tokyo’s Harajuku district, and there began to merge streetwear, fashion design and youth culture.

In 2010, Takahashi became the first designer to collaborate with Nike on a multi-seasonal basis with the GYAKUSOU running collection, and in 2015, he celebrated the 25th anniversary of UNDERCOVER with a retrospective museum exhibit in Tokyo. In addition, the UNDERCOVER presentation at Pitti Uomo 93 will be the brand’s return to Florence in nearly nine years.

Miyashita

Unlike Takahashi, Miyashita does not possess formal fashion training. In fact, he began designing by deconstructing and reconstructing clothes as a teen. Born in Tokyo in 1973, Miyashita worked in design for Nepenthes in Harajuku, launched Number (N)ine, his first fashion line that combined American youth culture with punk and grunge rock music, and later founded TAKAHIROMIYASHITATheSoloist in 2010.

“We are sure that the back-to-back shows will highlight the work of these two talents,” added Cianchi. “Undercover’s dizzyingly postmodern yet sublime looks, and Takahashi’s unconventional considerations of the beautiful and the weird will be juxtaposed against Miyashita’s forays into the Western imagination and youth culture transformed through his unique design vision. I truly hope that once again Florence will prove to be an endless source of inspiration for these designers, as well as for their global audience.”

Pitti Immagine Uomo 93 will be held from January 9-12, 2018.
