The Store Scout – Hayward House
Marin Hopper Combines Hollywood Glamour and East Coast Opulence for the Hawyward House at the Grosvenor Atterbury Mansion in Manhattan’s Upper East Side

New York City’s Upper East Side is home to remodeled, upscale homes, the Met, Guggenheim, Cooper Hewitt, and Museum of the City of New York on Museum Mile, the Madison Avenue shopping strip and acres of greenery at Central Park. In the center of the bustling yet calm neighborhood is the Grosvenor Atterbury Mansion, the former home of the American architect, urban planner and writer, and now current home of luxury label Hayward.
The Hayward House is a marriage between “Hollywood glamour, an opulent east coast sensibility, and the Wild West,” according to founder Marin Hopper. Daughter of actors Dennis Hopper and Brooke Hayward, Marin said on the Hayward website that it was impossible to not embark on a career in art.
It was impossible for me to end up in a career that was not somehow connected with the art of making things, having grown up in a house that was a collection of all things great and small: Great art. Small dogs. Great parties. No regular meals. Beautiful ladies’ arms laden with gold and silver bracelets. Andy Warhol.
Being exposed to luxury and creativity at a young age had an influence on the Hayward handbag and accessories collection and the Upper East Side store.
Hayward handbags are crafted with suede, velvet, python, silk and leather materials, and feature stripe patterns, illustrations and high-quality hardware. Much like Marin’s handbag collection, the Hayward House is an experience backed by luxury and high design, with a Lucite vanity from 1970, Roman shades made of de Gournay velvet, Milo Baughman, Karl Springer and Fontana Arte furniture, and Murano-glass chandeliers.
The interior also features copper oriel windows, a hand-painted and gold-stitched ceiling, and a golden fireplace that will make one feel like they should take their shoes off in the store out of respect.
Marin’s goal with Hayward is to build the first American luxury fashion brand that draws inspiration from Hollywood history and glamour. It sounds like setting up shop at the Atterbury Mansion was inevitable, much like her career.
