Louis Vuitton x Jeff Koons Masters Collaboration Merges Two Classical Works
BY NICOLE REIMAN
Louis Vuitton and Jeff Koons reveal “Masters,” their collaboration on a line of handbags and accessories. This is Koons first time creating an original design for a brand, and saw it as a way to broaden his audience. The pieces will be available in select stores beginning April 28th, and will not be available for purchase online. The collection features a variety of handbag styles as well as bunny key chains that resemble Koons’ famous balloon bunny creations.
Koons, best known for working with popular culture subjects, took his “Gazing Ball Paintings” inspiration further, turning it into handbags. The Gazing Ball Paintings are meant to allow the viewer to experience themselves as they are experiencing the painting. Koons recreated this experience in the handbag through the reflective metal lettering of the artist’s name. The collaboration features paintings by renowned artists such as Da Vinci, Titian, Rubens, Fragonard, and Van Gogh. Koons even added a new twist to Louis Vuitton’s designs with his own initials featured on the bags as well, in the signature crossed style. The designs stray away from the usual Louis Vuitton logo handbags, and merge two classical works into one.
