LVMH has announced the 21 designers selected for the 2017 LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers, the competition that has named winners such as Grace Wales Bonner and had participants such as Jacquemus, Hood by Air, and Off-White c/o Virgil Abloh. The designers have been shortlisted by the selection committee out of 1,200 candidates from 90 countries.
This year’s participating designers include 10 menswear designers and 9 womenswear designers, exclusively, and 2 designers that develop both women’s and men’s collections.
Designers participating in the fourth annual LVMH Prize include New York City-based Abasi Rosborough, Jahnkoy, and Katherine Mavridis; London’s Martine Rose, Nabil Nayal, Richard Malone, Charles Jeffrey Loverboy, Daniel W. Fletcher, and Dilara Findikoglu; Paris’ Atlein and Marine Serre; Tokyo-based Ambush, Kozaburo, and Sulvam; Angus Chiang of Taiwan; Blindness from Seoul; Copenhagen-based Danish designer Cecilie Bahnsen; Berlin’s GMBH; Maggie Marilyn of Auckland; and Palomo Spain from Cordoba.
Delphine Arnault, Director and EVP of Louis Vuitton, noted that the LVMH Prize is “committed to its international dimension”, with this year’s batch of designers hailing from Australia, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Russia, Spain, Taiwan, Turkey, the UK and the US. She also considers streetwear and gender diversity to be two distinct characteristics for the 2017 LVMH Prize.
Boldness in innovation is the keyword for these 21 young designers. As the leader of the fashion industry, it is the mission of the LVMH group to discover and help young talents to develop their uniqueness.
The 21 designers will meet 45 international fashion experts, including Carine Roitfeld, Emmanuelle Alt, Imran Amed, Miroslava Duma, Carla Sozzani and Suzy Menkes among others, who will pick 8 finalists during a showroom visit that will take place on March 2 and 3. A jury comprised of Arnault, LVMH Fashion Group Chairman and CEO Pierre-Yves Roussel, Jean-Paul Claverie, Head of Corporate Philanthropy for LVMH and advisor to Bernard Arnault, and others will select the Prize winner on June 16, 2017.
