Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2015 Video
By Kenneth Richard | the Impressionist
Marc Jacobs never lacks for wit and his most recent fashion film for Spring 2015 is a testament to the house’s subversive sense of humor. In the video, a group of Marc Jacobs-clad art patrons visit a gallery to stand at military style attention while staring at pink blocks of so-modern-it-is-boring paintings. The piece nods, be it intentional or not, at David Hockney’s 1968 painting American Collectors (Fred and Marcia Weisman) featuring a relentlessly stiff art collecting couple who are as still as the objects surrounding them.
‘American Collectors’ is an apt name to apply to the Marc Jacobs piece as many a passionate fashion collector does just that with his handbags. Thankfully, Marc has more of a sense of humor than the tight fisted Fred Weisman featured in Hockney’s work and introduces a binding ingredient, peppermint candy. Bringing the group together and making for a video of minty fresh air.
