The Portuguese designers were chosen by a team of 9 creative directors from the LVMH fashion houses including: Nicolas Ghesquière (Louis Vuitton), Marc Jacobs (Marc Jacobs), Karl Lagerfeld (Fendi), Humberto Leon and Carol Lim (Kenzo), Phoebe Philo (Céline), Raf Simons (Dior), Riccardo Tisci (Givenchy), J.W. Anderson (Loewe), along with Delphine Arnault, Jean-Paul Claverie (advisor to Bernard Arnault and head of corporate philanthropy for LVMH) and Pierre-Yves Roussel (Chairman and CEO of the LVMH Fashion Group).
Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida received prizes of a 300,000 euro purse, along with 12 months of coaching from executives at the world’s largest luxury group LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton. LVMH will assist the designers in developing their company, helping them with tasks like marketing, sourcing, production, and distribution.
The competition whittled down from a group of 26 candidates to 8 finalists who were selected by a panel of judges including editors, journalists, stylists, and department store executives. Marques’ Almeida were up against other hard-working designers who included: Arthur Arbesser, Craig Green, Faustian Steinmetz, Simon Porte Jacquemus, Virgil Abloh, and Demna Gvasalia, all who are based in Milan, London, or Paris.
After recently accepting roles as artistic directors for Courrèges, the French duo who created the Coperni women’s, Sebastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant, withdrew from the competition as they shuttered their nascent label.
Actress Natalie Portman, the face of Miss Dior perfume, presented Marques and Almeida their award at the Louis Vuitton Foundation ceremony in Paris this morning.
The LVMH prize was created in 2013 by Delphine Arnault, who is the top talent scout in her family-owned luxury group. The LVMH prize is available for designers who are under 40 years of age, and who have presented and sold 2 or more collections of men’s or women’s ready-to-wear clothing.
The Impression congratulates Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida as well as runner up Simon Porte Jacquemus and looks forward to much continued success.
