Peter Lindbergh Lenses the 2017 Pirelli Calendar Featuring Nicole Kidman, Léa Seydoux, Alicia Vikandert, and More
BY KENNETH RICHARD
Fashion’s iconic lensman Peter Lindbergh has turned his camera once again on the Pirelli Calendar setting a classic tone as well a record as he becomes the only photographer to have been asked to shoot the calendar for the fourth time.
Lindbergh’s first outing for the calendar was in 1996 when he shot in the El Mirage desert in California. That was followed by a 2002 outing at Paramount Pictures studios in Los Angeles and a teaming with Patrick Demarchelier to celebrate the 50th year of the calendar in 2014.
For 2017, Lindbergh decided to shoot unretouched and enlisted 14 internationally renowned actresses: Helen Mirren, Robin Wright, Charlotte Rampling, Lupita Nyong’o, Jessica Chastain, Kate Winslet, Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, Rooney Mara, Penelope Cruz, Léa Seydoux, Alicia Vikander, Uma Thurman, and Zhang Ziyi. To round out the bunch he invited Anastasia Ignatova, professor of Political Theory at MGIMO – Moscow State University of International Relations to join the group.
In a time when women are represented in the media and everywhere else, as ambassadors of perfection and youth, I thought it was important to remind everyone that there is a different beauty, more real and truthful and not manipulated by commercial or any other interests, a beauty which speaks about individuality, courage to be yourself and your own private sensibility…
That sensibility was captured in five different locations: New York, London, Berlin, Los Angeles, and the beach at Le Touquet in France. The result is a calendar consisting of 40 images blending studios, city streets, attic roofs, rundown hotels, along with shots at the Sophiensaele theatre in Berlin and Times Square in New York.
“My aim was to portray women in a different way”, says Lindbergh, “and I did it by calling in actresses who’ve played an important role in my life, getting as close as possible to them to take my photos. As an artist, I feel I’m responsible for freeing women from the idea of eternal youth and perfection. The ideal of perfect beauty promoted by society is something that simply can’t be attained.”
The Impression likes to call out that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the subtly of Lindberg’s work, selection of talent, and expressive moments is perfection enough. We’ve always appreciated those who have a little milage on their tires after all.
