Michael Pitt directs Rag & Bone’s spring 2015 fashion film

It’s the season of crossing over for Rag & Bone and Michael Pitt as each takes on a new role with the release of the brand’s Spring 2015 ad campaign. Actor Pitt, who returns as the face of the brand for the third season, moves behind the lens, making his directorial debut while designers Marcus Wainwright and David Neville turn into full-fledged executive producers behind the featurette.

Along with photographer/collaborator Glen Luchford, the house has taken the meaning of ‘film’ in fashion seriously, producing the trailer below as a lead into the yet to be released 12 minute film. The stunningly shot black and white trailer has all the makings of a hit, including beautiful cinematography, sharp editing, strong sound and a quality cast which includes Pitt as well as fellow Boardwalk Empire co-star, Stephen Graham, and actress Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey. In the trailer we see the city as the fourth cast member as limos skim the streets and skylines grace the frame. Sans dialogue yet dripping with tension, we are drawn in what appears to be the drama of a love-triangle. It is the triangle that we find interesting as the piece definitely has a beginning, middle and end, which The Impression has previously mentioned is far too often lacking in fashion ‘films,’ making them more like fashion ‘fluff.’

The print campaign, lensed by Glen Luchford, captures scenes from the film, which is telling as brands ahead of the curve are recognizing the need to concept in motion first, then draw stills from it.

We applaud the vision of the designing duo to build the brand as an entertainment experience with the product as the souvenir and this is one trailer that is paving a trail. We are looking forward to following it.
