The Store Scout, rag & bone Beak Street
BY BRENNA O’DONNELL
In a move that combined their modern romance with New York City industrialization and their hearty British heritage, rag & bone has opened their third London location. The 14,000 square foot store on Beak Street in London now acts as the European headquarters for the brand, a crown jewel of their thirty-six international locations.
Just as the rag & bone brand held close to its classic English background while moving across the pond to follow inspiration through the rough and tough American landscape, the Beak Street store keeps the building’s Victorian character while creating a space that reflects their own unique style that has made them a global success in the fashion industry.
The exterior of the store is coated in green brick and accented with white moldings, standing out against the other more muted buildings in the area. Interior aspects of the store and its specialty furnishings were designed by rag & bone’s in house Custom Fabrication Shop, including metal and walnut display units, custom brass racks, and a hot-rolled steel staircase with leather and reclaimed wood details.
Even with a shared rugged yet high-end aesthetic, no two rag & bone stores are ever alike, using their spaces to their full potential and customizing them to whichever city they happen to call home. In the case of the Beak Street location, three European artists were commissioned to create original murals for the store: Shok-1, an English pioneer spray paint artist; Stanley Donwood, an Essex-born painter and writer; and Herakut, a pair of German street artists.
While a few other rag & bone stores have gone a single-sex route, such as the men’s store in Tribeca, NYC or the women’s store in Georgetown, DC, the Beak Street store carries both men’s and women’s clothes, footwear, accessories, fragrances, as well as their famous denim line.
