Robert Geller 2017 CFDA Menswear Nominee
BY KENNETH RICHARD
With a dash of masculine romance mixed with a pinch of 80’s New Wave, Robert Geller has spent the last 10 years defining and sharing his unique point-of-view that earned him a 2017 CFDA Menswear Nomination. Other nominees include Raf Simons for Calvin Klein, Tim Coppens, Thom Browne, and Todd Snyder.
A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, the Hamburg born designer, husband, father and recreational footballer has built a reputable business which attracted the investment of Japanese Onward Global Fashion (previous owners of the likes of Helmut Lang and Jean Paul Gaultier, and current Japanese distributors of Jil Sander and Rochas).
We asked the designer (along with fellow nominees) how he heard of his nomination.
How did you hear of your nomination?
I was in Tokyo for work and I saw my friends text. He congratulated me on the nomination and I had no idea what he was talking about. Then my heart began to race and I checked my email. There were a million messages from the CFDA, saying that they have been trying to reach me. I had turned my phone off to sleep, so nobody could reach me. I was not expecting this.
What was your reaction?
I was really excited. Especially seeing that I am in the same category as Raf. I mean, it’s a little strange that he is nominated after just one collection, but on the other hand, he was a huge reason why I fell in love with fashion.
What would your family give you an award for?
I get a lot of respect from the girls for my drawing skills. They always ask me to design dresses for them, with puppy prints or heart embroideries. Although, Ana is really amazing, it may be a tight contest for Best Illustrator in the family.
What do you do with your first moment of free time after a show?
The night of the show is usually reserved for a celebration with everyone involved in the show and friends and family. I think that it is important for everyone to take a breath and have a good time. The following day is usually for the family.
What was your favorite standout moment of 2016?
I think that it is all about 2017. This is the year of positive change. It is about setting the direction for the next ten years.
