Julia Restoin-Roitfeld has joined luminaries James Franco, Balthazar Klarwein and Nino Muño as the fourth director of Stuart Weitzman’s short-film series. Her directorial debut appropriately titled ‘Rock Roll Ride‘ is a strong first outing for the 2nd generation fashion aficionado, and The Impression looks forward to many more.
Julia has been playing in the fashion space ever since she was an infant, as the daughter of fashion enthusiast and connoisseur Carine Roitfeld, she’s done everything from art direction, to modeling, to founding her own fashion blog. She expands upon her fashion heritage here with her featurette short.
As a creative director, I think secretly I always wanted to direct a movie, and when Stuart Weitzman approached me to direct their fourth short film, I immediately said yes because I’m obsessed with shoes.
Taking styling and lighting inspiration from Playboy magazine of the sixties, Julia is a good match for Stuart Weitzman as they are familiar with creating pin-ups of their own having previoulsy done so with the likes of supermodels Gisele Bundchen, Kate Moss & Natalia Vodianova.
The featurette stars English socialite and model, Poppy Delevigne and actress/model Dylan Penn, daughter of Sean Penn and Robin Wright with music by Lana Del Ray. Conveying the “fast cars, fast women, fast lifestyle”, and shot in the Hampton’s no less, we see Julia’s heroines in and out of sports cars, on motorcycles, riding bicycles, and laughing together. Despite the abundance of sexual innuendos from nudity on a fur rug to the risqué rocker-bike bend over, it feels as though Julia was holding back her provocative potential in her freshman effort. Perhaps a little less playful scenarious and a little more of a continuation of sultry suggestions could’ve made the short stronger and possibly more viral. Some of the shots almost seemed too innocent for expressing the appeal of knee high boots we’ve come to know from Stuart Weitzman.
