Tim Coppens 2017 CFDA Menswear Nominee
BY KENNETH RICHARD
Subversive, intense, charming, witty and wry, Tim Coppens and his post punk aesthetic have been winning over The Impression along with others in the industry earning him a 2017 CFDA Menswear Nomination. Fellow nominees include Raf Simons for Calvin Klein, Robert Keller, Thom Browne, and Todd Snyder.
The native Belgium who graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp has had an amazing year being tapped as Create Director of Under Armour’s UAS line as well as selected to show at Pitti Uomo in January. That show was inspired by a young love story the designer invented about a couple named Max and Tequila, who along with a characters including a white horse named Lady Lips and a nameless white dove, track across Europe. The inspiration lead to a new slogan ‘Never Ending Fun’ which was printed on sweatshirts over an image of an exploding H-bomb and on the underside of popped collars.
The renegade love story of a collection was part political, part tonue-in-cheek, and laser focused at the right moment, which is not unlike the designer himself who is concise in his chose of words. We asked the designer (along with fellow nominees) how he heard of his nomination.
I was surprised and very happy of course.
2016 was never ending fun…
