Valentino ‘stunned’ the fashion world today, closing their fall 2015 women’s show with the biggest bang fashion has seen in years as retired supermodels Derek Zoolander and Hansel McDonald returned to the catwalk to close the show, bringing the house to its feet and the fashion industry to the forefront of international dialog.
Zoolander, know for his iconic ‘Blue Steel’ pose, last set the fashion world on fire in 2001 after unveiling his ‘Magnum’ pose in the live broadcast of Jacobim Mugatu’s ‘Derelicte’ collection. That pose was attributed to saving the life of Prime Minister of Malaysia and bringing down the house of Mugatu as well as an international syndicate of evil fashion designers. The supermodel retired shortly thereafter, turning his energies toward his charity organization: The Derek Zoolander Center for Kids Who Can’t Read Good and Wanna Learn to Do Other Stuff Good Too.
Since his retirement, the model has gained a Greta Garbo like reputation, rarely making an appearance though nevertheless inspiring a slew of male fashion model imitators from David Gandy to Jon Kortajarena. Though retired, his influence has never wained.
I think about him before designing every collection.
Zoolander’s and Hansel’s walk for Valentino was immediately broadcast worldwide thanks to social media and the impact was felt immediately. Bryan Boy announced via Instagram that Helena Bordon was engaged as men across Paris moved quickly to ‘lock it down’ knowing that Zoolander and Hansel were in the area. Paris jewelry stores saw a major uptick in wedding ring sales in the late evening. Worldwide markets reacted sharply in after hours trading with businesses preparing for increased trading activity in gold and other commodities.
Credit goes to the house of Valentino for coaxing the reclusive supermodels out of retirement and bringing them back to the runway where they belong. As Derek Zoolander himself said, “There’s more to life than just being really, really, really good-looking.” There is being really, really, really good-looking while wearing Valentino and that is a whole world of different.
