Alexander Wang Hits the Road with Adidas Originals by Alexander Wang
It would appear that designer Alexander Wang, Creative Direction Ferdinando Verdue, and Wang’s iconic Wang Squad were game for a little road trip this season in an effort to launch the designer’s new adidas Originals by Alexander Wang collection. However, to make the trip just a tad more interesting, rather than pooling together a little dough for gas money, the gang had to get from L.A. to Coachella with nothing but rejected samples from the line to barter with. Cue Instagram genius.
To the satisfaction of our millennial, social media-infatuated generation, along for the ride to capture the shenanigans was photographer Brianna Capozzi, who propped models Binx Walton, Hanne Gaby Odiele, Lexi Boling, Issa Lish and Cat McNeil, and the designer himself against gas stations, quickie marts, and car washes for the social media album.
Packed in the same tour bus that famously wandered around New York for Wang’s spring 2018 show, now is Wang and his squad as they journey this time undergoing undeniably chic measures to do so.
At the heart of the collaboration between Wang and adidas Originals is the disruptive mix of the expected and the unexpected. Behind this spontaneous road trip narrative lays the key elements of the adidas Originals by Alexander Wang brand: “the embrace of imperfection, the implications of price and value, and the subversion of fashion communication as it is known.” Through bartering rejected pieces of clothing, Wang insinuates to the idea that there might actually be value in something flawed, thus establishing new standards of fashion as commodity. In this, Wang further alludes to a deeper issue of acceptance.
Alexander Wang’s latest season launches today at select retailers worldwide, adidas Originals & Alexander Wang flagship locations, and online as well.
On a deeper note, could it be that Alexander Wang and his creative team are onto something in the realm of a cash-free barter society, hence the bartering of clothing? It could very well be the case that Finland’s Universal Basic Income team is paying close attention to the Wang Squad’s antics. If so, we know plenty of fashion players up for a trade.
