Ann Demeulemeester investigates creative connection and New York nostalgia with the second chapter of KIDS, a collaborative visual diary curated by creative director Stefano Gallici featuring members of the brand’s extended artistic community. The imagery was created in collaboration with photographer Jason Renaud.
Expanding on the foundation laid in London, Paris, and Berlin, the New York chapter of KIDS brings together a new circle of makers and artists who embody the energy and diversity of New York’s thriving artistic community. Shot over one week in corners both iconic and hidden of the city, the project features musician Stella Rose Gahan, actor Quintessa Swindell, designer Jakob Hetzer, model Dakota Butler, and painter Hunter Amos. Renaud sees this group of young creative minds with a soulful, almost melancholic perspective, capturing his spontaneous shots on analogue film and distorting the color and exposure values to create a nostalgic and ephemeral mood, poignantly pointing to memory and the passage of time.
That delicately moody and romantic character is very on-brand for Ann Demeulemeester, but the campaign also evinces some thoughtful evolution in digital strategy. It’s very smart for the brand to put their own spin on a format that makes a clever play to social media connection to its unconventional casting of artists who are internet tastemakers, balancing an organic and ephemeral look at poetic individual style with a digitally savvy strategy.
