Review of Bergdorf Goodman ‘The Present Moment’ Holiday 2021 Ad Campaign, by Creative Director Elle Strauss with designers Michael Kors, Emily Bode, Christopher John Rogers, Sergio Hudson, Waris Ahluwalia, & Marc Jacobs
Bergdorf Goodman sends up Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel with a delightful new holiday campaign starring some of our favorite American designers.
Thoughtfully timed for both the season of gift giving and the arrival in theaters of Wes Anderson’s newest film The French Dispatch, Bergdorf Goodman puts a fashionable spin on one of the director’s most beloved previous films, The Grand Budapest Hotel.
The campaign reimagines the film’s stylish central location as Bergdorf Goodman’s equally stylish original location, and its eccentric cast as the fashion designers whose work illuminates its racks and shelves.
The cinematography and sound design treats us to some of Anderson’s iconic visual and storytelling quirks – an excellent use of bright and pastel colors, perfectly symmetrical shots, plainspoken narrators – as we encounter delightful appearances from designers like Michael Kors, Waris Ahluwalia (who appeared in the actual Grand Budapest Hotel as well as Anderson’s The Darjeeling Limited and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou), Emily Bode, Sergio Hudson, and Christopher John Rogers. It’s fun to see these iconic creatives in a different element as they embrace the film’s sense of whimsicality and playfulness.
The film’s ending reveal treats us to one final familiar face, as we learn the central figure of the courier has been none other than Marc Jacobs all along.
One of the most unique campaigns we’ve seen this season, the film is an excellent way to develop a strong sense of narrative cohesion, as well as being simply delightful in its visuals and casting.
Department store campaigns have the difficult task in uniting many disparate designers and aesthetics into one impactful piece, and the reference to a familiar work by a beloved director is a smart way to bring all of these characters together while still reveling in their eclecticism.
