Review of Both Paris ‘Pinky Violence’ Spring 2021 Ad Campaign by Both Paris Creative Directors Mats Rombaut and Nicolas Santos & Manga Artist Peppe
Renowned for unique collaborations on both the design and campaign fronts, Both Paris treats us to a fun new digital campaign created by manga artist Peppe.
The brand’s Spring 2021 footwear collection, “Pinky Violence,” draws inspiration from the rich archives of Japanese art, style, and street culture.
The collection creates a palette of symbolic elements influenced by vintage Japanese films, cherry blossoms, neon lights, souvenir jackets, contemporary Japanese calligraphy, traditional geta clogs, and more. The result is an eclectic blend of old and new, traditional and modern.
In celebration of the release, Both Paris recruited Peppe, an Italian manga artist who lives and works in Tokyo, to create a manga starring the new collection. Peppe created a series of surreally fun narrative vignettes, which both deliver on and challenge our expectations of manga tropes. The slick color scheme of black, white, pink, and red echoes that of the collection.
The digital campaign feels like a perfect way to capture Both’s internationally collaborative spirit and the unique character of their new collection.
