Family Isolation Portfolio Series by Erik Madigan Heck
Carolina Herrera has collaborated with photographer Erik Madigan Heck to create a series of photos entitled ‘Family Isolation Portfolio / Roxbury Diary’, featuring Heck’s wife Brianna Killion Heck as model and muse. The series is a personal exploration of nature’s resplendent colours and textures, and are partially the results of constraints imposed by the global pandemic, due to the need for self-isolation.
Carolina Herrera Creative Director Wes Gordon explains the circumstances surrounding the vibrant and ethereal imagery; “I have been quarantining at our farm since mid-March. Down the road live my good friends, Erik and Bri.”
Erik is one of my favorite photographers, creating images that blur the line between dream and reality, painting, and photograph. We were both feeling creatively restless and decided to do a photo series, modeled by his wife Bri. I gathered the few samples I was able to access. No hair stylists or makeup artists. No assistants for Erik. Just him and his camera, using locations in our little town of Roxbury.

Heck’s photography uses neoclassical conventions of a youthful muse communing with nature as the springboard, and catapults the imagery into modernity through subtle digital manipulations. In some photos, blossoms from trees and fields are pared down to mimic painterly color palettes. In others, gauzy gradations are utilized to evoke surrealistic atmospheres, reminiscent of skies and mist…but drawing their color from the flowing fabrics rather than the surrounding environment. Subsequently, the gradations are rendered in shifting tonalities of yellow, peach, blue, and black. Simultaneously fresh and timeless, the images show how creative ingenuity can transcend constraints (and even use them to advantage) when artists can tune-in and extrapolate the beauty that surrounds them.
