Christian Louboutin 'Walk a Mile in My Shoes' Summer 2021 Ad Campaign

Review of Christian Louboutin ‘Walk a Mile in My Shoes’ Summer 2021 Ad Campaign by Creative Director Christian Louboutin and Photographer Julien Vallon with Idris and Sabrina Elba

Christian Louboutin partners with Idris and Sabrina Elba to take a stand for racial equity and solidarity.

Co-designed by the Elbas, the “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” capsule reimagines Louboutin’s iconic red-bottomed heels with a message of empathy and solidarity. The Elbas and Louboutin had already been friends for a few years, and the collaborative project emerged from a desire to make an example-setting contribution to the global struggle for racial justice and equity.

The Elbas were especially focused on this issue after the reignition of the Black Lives Matter movement in March 2020, and as a visible Black couple they spoke candidly about global inequality and shared their first-hand experiences of discrimination. Using their social media platforms as a vehicle to call for change, the couple engaged in an Instagram live discussion with one of the co-founders of the BLM movement, Opal Tometi. Unbeknownst to the Elbas, their friend Louboutin had actually tuned in to the video conference, and was inspired to work with a couple on a project that could embody their goals.

100% of proceeds from the collection will directly benefit five grassroots organizations across three continents that are committed to creating self-sustainable equity in communities of color.

These organizations support the victims of police brutality and racial injustice in the United States, small farmers and their children in Somalia, disconnected underserved youth in England, and orphaned children and young girls in Sierra Leone.

The collection and its message is captured in a stripped-back and striking photography campaign captured by Julien Vallon. In a series of emotional portraits, two models express the idea of empathy through a physical language of togetherness and kinship.

It’s quite rare that we see a charity capsule in which all of the profits are donated, so the move feels powerfully symbolic as well as practical in its impact. Considering the genesis of the collaboration coming from a genuine place of friends working together for good, the collection and its campaign feel uniquely important and powerful. It’s inspiring to see a designer think deeply about how to use his platform to take a stand and make change, and we applaud Louboutin and the Elbas for their leadership, bravery, and generosity.
