Christopher Esber and photographer Duncan Killick explore sensual beach bliss in a new campaign for Spring 2021.
Each of Killick’s images is an intentionally arranged composition of bodies on the beach. From the physical relationships of their bodies in space and from their facial expressions, these people feel both totally united and individual, like a group of sculptures. Excellent styling creates a sense of harmony and rhythm through bodies and colors.
Taking its cue from the collection’s 70’s inspiration, the campaign sustains a note of free love and sexual liberation. An implication of group sexual dynamics is never far away.
As the sky’s gradient changes from the soft pearl of daytime to a purply dusk, layers are shed, and some tasteful nudity is elegantly woven through the various states of dress. In fact, the openness of the imagery makes us question what nudity even is, and why our perception of it is so influenced by gender roles.
Lots of fashion marketing communications that are more covered-up still feel gratuitous and objectifying. This campaign allows itself to be gratifying and sensual, but it does so at an honest, self-determining, human level, and presents it with an artist’s eye. Combining sun-soaked splendor with a respectful celebration of bodily beauty, the campaign is an alluring success.
