Review of Converse X Rick Owens Drkshdw TurboDrk Capsule 2021 Ad Campaign by Photographers Steven Raj and Hannah Rose
Rick Owens and Converse celebrate the inaugural launch of their collaborative sneaker endeavor with a freaky-deaky campaign by artist duo Fecal Matter, AKA Steven Raj and Hannah Rose.
The collaboration with Owens’ DRKSHDW marks the first time in Converse’s century of existence that it has launched a Chuck Taylor silhouette with a square toe – and who better to break this ground than the minimalist, modernist mastermind himself?
To create the campaign, the collaborators tapped Fecal Matter (who have worked with Owens previously), an artist duo whose work in design, digital art, and photography pushes the boundaries of the human body to create transgressive, otherworldly visions of simultaneous beauty and horror. By their standards, the campaign is relatively tame. Clad in skin-tight leather body suits and alien goth makeup, the duo pose expressively, their long limbs intertwining.
With striking visuals that celebrate the beauty of self-expression in all its chaotic weirdness, the campaign is a bold way to debut a visionary designer’s take on an American classic.
