Diane von Furstenberg uses her own New York City backyard to shoot her inspirational, dynamic, and mighty Fall 2017 campaign. The cultural melting pot of NYC being where the Belgian fashion designer’s career took off, and is now home to DVF headquarters and flagship boutique in the heart of Manhattan, the Big Apple is the perfect environment for her latest collection.
In the images and video of the campaign, Diane von Furstenberg’s loud designs act as a part of the city landscape just as much as they stand out boldly against the status quo; the models are not seen as newcomers and do not interrupt the scene to pull focus onto the clothing, but rather are perfectly at home as vibrantly patterned animals in the concrete jungle. The sounds of the city, like dogs panting, sirens blaring, and heels clicking get just as much airtime as the call to action voice over since the city’s hustle and bustle is just as central to the brand’s identity.
The models are not shown merely smoldering at the camera, as is a common trope in fashion campaigns but rather they hail taxis, walk dogs, sip coffee, laugh with friends on park benches in this ode to the endless contradictions of New York.
The campaign is captured during a unique moment in America, and the fashion film shines with can-do feminist attitude while acknowledging and embracing diversity, ending with an image of the Statue of Liberty as an emblem of what made the DVF brand, and so many other dreams, possible.
