Review of Dior Men’s Pre-Fall 2021 Ad Campaign by Dior Men’s Artistic Director Kim Jones, Creative Director Ronnie Cooke Newhouse with Photographer Rafael Pavarotti
Dior celebrates optimism and experimentation with a colorful new Pre-Fall 2021 Men’s campaign. With creative direction from Ronnie Cooke Newhouse and photography by Rafel Pavarotti, the campaign continues Kim Jones‘ homage to the work of Kenny Scharf.
Scharf was a crucial player in the East Village art scene of the ’80s, where he quickly gained notoriety alongside fellow artists Basquiat and fast friend Keith Haring. His bombastic visual style explores intersections of pop culture and street culture and draws heavily on the world of cartoons.
Jones drew on Scharf’s work for his Fall collection, an exquisite tapestry of tailored sophistication and irreverent pop-art psychedelia that forms another exciting chapter in his reconsideration of modern masculinity.
Cooke Newhouse’s art direction and Pavarotti’s photography also use Scharf’s work as its basis, blowing it up to create an immersive world of color and character. This background creates opportunities for a fluid dynamic of harmony and contrast: the silhouettes of solid-colored suits are strikingly emphasized, while layered patterns create a kaleidoscope of color drawing us ever further in. It’s also great to see that the models were having fun with the shoot, cracking real smiles between their smiles.
Bringing Kenny Scharf’s out-of-this-world universe to life via Rafael’s photography this season was a moment of optimism in challenging times. These images represent the hope of returning to reality in a not-so-distant future.

Though Scharf’s characters are fantastical, the energy of the campaign feels alive and real. We can see exactly what Jones means in terms of hope and positivity, and we are happy to follow his lead as we step into a brighter future.
