Dior Men’s Partners with Sacai On Co-branded Capsule

Longtime Friends, Kim Jones and Chitose Abe Collaborate For The First Time For Dior x Sacai Capsule

Dior x Sacai are launching their first capsule later this year. This is also marks the first time longtime friends, artistic director of Dior Men’s, Kim Jones and founder of Sacai, Chitose Abe have collaborated. The houses describe the men’s collection as “a creative conversation between two designers, two heritages and two cultures.”

This weekend, Dior released images of the menswear line, which fuses the DNA of both the French and Japanese brands. A total of 57 pieces are featured in the collection, which reinvents the Dior logo, using Sacai’s name written inside the “i” in Dior. Jones’ signature sporty tailoring is paired with with Abe’s love of splicing unexpected and multiple fabrics to create garments that showcase the unmistakable identities of both label’s aesthetics.

The materials are utilitarian, including Japanese denim, nylon, and stiff cotton. Dior florals are combined with the modern fabrications characteristic of Sacai, with a color palette predominantly of black and white. Abe added extra soles to the Dior Snow and Dior Explorer boots, and created jewelry blending the CD logo in gold and silver finished brass adorned with Sacai’s trademark pearls.

The duo also worked together on a new iteration of Dior’s iconic saddle bag, again using utilitarian embellishments that are specific to Sacai’s aesthetic. Pockets and drawstrings were added to nylon and leather bags, paying hommage to the classic Sacai bomber jacket

Both Jones and Abe have an affinity for collaborations. Sacai has partnered with mainstream brands Nike and The North Face, contemporary lines like A.P.C, and emerging designers like Tomo Koizumi. Fans are still anxiously awaiting the debut of her John Paul Gaultier collection to be revealed in July at Paris Couture.

Jones contributed to the luxury streetwear phenomenon with the 2017 collaboration between Louis Vuitton and cult New York skatewear brand Supreme. In addition, he has designed for brands including Nike, Converse and Umbro. Jones has stated his collaborations stem from a love of working with people and his peers.

Jones also believes in fostering the relationship between fashion and art, through seasonal collaborations with artists like Kaws, Daniel Arsham, Kenny Scharf and Peter Doig. Jones saw these partnerships as a nod to founder Christian Dior’s early roots as a gallerist.

Jones often considers Christian Dior is his decision-making process for the brand. He sees the collaboration with Sacai as innovative and as groundbreaking. Something the founder would approve of as it embraces the modern world.

Due to travel restrictions that are still in place in some regions, the Sacai capsule line is anticipated to drop sometime this Fall. It will be priced slightly above Dior’s main collection.
