Review of Emporio Armani EA Stars Spring 2021 Ad Campaign by Photographer Paolo Barbi with Models Lorraine Kuss, Eli Romanova, Talia Ferralis, Eli Epperson, Lorenzo Cartacci, and Dominik Sadoch
Sequins shimmer and guitars hum in a slick new campaign from Emporio Armani. Merging glam-rock excess with artful minimalism, photographer Paolo Barbi captures the spirit of the brand’s EA Stars eveningwear capsule collection.
Taking the collection’s motifs of colored feathers, rakish jackets, and glittering sequins as his cue, Barbi explores a conceptual theme of glam-rock drama. Without explicitly telling a story, his short film centers on a group of cosmopolitan rock musicians, depicting both the joys and the tensions that arise from inter-band relationships. The casting choices for models, androgynous and with impeccable bone structure, remind of David Bowie and Joan Jett.
Barbi’s photographs develop the aesthetic of elegant edginess. The collection’s cohesive color scheme of black and metallic blue and green, as well as its consistent use of shine and shimmer, give him opportunities to explore pattern and juxtaposition. Situating his models in a minimalist apartment interior, he finds interesting textural contrasts and harmonies.
The collection positions itself as a bit of a rule breaker by bringing a sense of glamorous rebellion to refined eveningwear.
The campaign manages to capture this spirit by finding an exciting balance between these two aspects, distilling some classic rock and roll and bottling it up in contemporary elegance.
