Review of Ermanno Scervino Spring 2021 Ad Campaign by Photographers Luigi & Iango with Models Irina Shayk, Natasha Poly and Joan Smalls
Ermanno Scervino offers up some throwback supermodel worship with a new campaign for Spring 2021 lensed by photography duo Luigi & Iango.
The campaign eschews narrative and aesthetic concepts in favor of simply turning up the sun-soaked sensuality. Luigi and Iango capture their cast of statuesque beauties within an atmosphere of refined earthiness: they languor on beaches, stride through shrubbery, stand next to a horse.
Perhaps it was an intentional choice as a nod to the fact that this season marks the label’s 20th anniversary, but the approach to the campaign feels somewhat antiquated. Long gone are the days when a woman sensually writhing among the waves on the shore felt desirable or mysterious; now it just looks kind of silly. Yet the campaign seems to want us to take it seriously.
Still, the imagery is quite effective as a lookbook in that it does show off the strength and versatility of the designs while maintaining an aesthetic consistency, and smartly situates them within both the sensual and natural worlds.
