Review of Ermenegildo Zegna ‘#WhatMakesAMan’ Spring 2021 Ad Campaign with Gabriel-Kane Day-Lewis & Isabelle Adjani

Multi-hyphenated multi-hyphenate Gabriel-Kane Day-Lewis stars in a thoughtful new campaign for classic menswear house Ermenegildo Zegna.

The campaign furthers Zegna’s exploration of the question “what makes a man?” which has been at the heart of their campaigns in the past. By uniting this question with subtle and sensitive imagery, the campaign hits a note of introspection and warmth.

Day-Lewis brings a feeling of openness and intimacy to his portraits, which make nice use of a serene outdoor setting. He is styled in a mix of Zegna’s legendarily tailored suits and more casual looks, reflecting the campaign’s idea of the multiplicity of masculinity (in this connection, it could have been good to see something traditionally thought of as more “feminine,” but this wouldn’t quite fall in Zegna’s wheelhouse).

The appearance in one of the portraits of Day-Lewis’ mother, decorated actress, and singer Isabelle Adjani, is a great touch. Her presence brings new meaning to the question at the heart of the campaign, pointing out that the ideas of manhood and self are inextricably linked to relationships with others. Combining strong portraiture with important questions, the campaign sparks a positive conversation on identity and relationship.
