Fringe & Fluff

Fall 2021 Trend

Fringe Moves from Supporting Role to the Main Event

Fringe has taken over the runways of Fall 2021. While we’re used to seeing fringe occasionally grace the hems and edges of jackets and dresses, its territory seems to have expanded. In addition to adding fringe to bags and boots, designers are exploring all-over fringe looks where the dangly decoration cascades in fluffy folds. By experimenting with the material and thickness of the cut, designers can create fringed looks that imitate other materials, like feathers, fur, and sequins. The results are a tangled web of texture, a colorful spectrum of fringe that speaks to endless possibilities.

Lanvin used feathery fringe accents for a feeling of soft sophistication. AC9 and Alexandre Vauthier share contemporary visions of fringey cowboy sleeves. Gabriela Hearst’s debut collection for Chloé featured earthy, blanket-like outerwear pieces which were complemented by fringed-out handbags. Human Poetics combined fringe culture and high class with a squad of goth princesses. Salvatore Ferragamo layered abstract fringe patterns onto pieces to expand and distort their silhouettes.
