The fashion film comes with a heavy lift. How to build a narrative that entertains and at the same time shows off an entire wardrobe in under three minutes. Impossible? Not so says Director Wim Wenders in his latest Fall 2018 campaign film for Jil Sander.

His solution comes in the form of his title, “Time Passing”, setting the film with a cast of three caught in a time loop. Titled scenarios are seen repeated over and over, with the only differences the changes in outfits and developing emotional responses. It is because of this ‘time loop’ that Wenders is able to successfully exhibit the various pieces in a way that does not overwhelm the audience.

Wenders, a key figure in the New German Cinema Movement, is known for his various award-winning movies such as Paris, Texas; Alice in the Cities; Wings of Desire; and Faraway, So Close! In this most recent film for Jil Sander, he uses an unusual setting to compliment the clothing. In doing so, Wender’s “encourages the viewer to plunge into the stream of events along with the characters.”

This isn’t the first time husband and wife Creative Directors of Jil Sander, Lucie and Luke Meier, have collaborated with the German film director, as he did their spring campaign films too.

Along with the unique film, a series of images were released, photographed by Wim’s wife, Donata Wenders. The shots focus on featured looks from the collection, showing the cast behind the scenes.

The Impression applauds the Wenders’ for their one-of-a-kind take on the collection. Though the film portrays the passing of time, it is anything but time just passing by.
