Review of Kate Spade ‘Celebrate Together’ Holiday 2020 Ad Campaign
Kate Spade has released a holiday ad campaign that is truly the cat’s meow! Style and humor are always precious gifts, but humor is especially important this holiday season because it will cap off one of the most difficult years in our collective history.
Kate Spade’s Creative Director Nicola Glass, who is originally from Northern Ireland and now resides in NYC, uses her keen sense of humor to re-appropriate the stereotype of the “crazy cat lady”. Transforming cat ladies into a fun and fanciful farce, the campaign imagery focuses on one particular feline companion with sparkly shoes, glittery baubles, and novelty clutches shaped like dominoes and dice. These cat ladies know how to party! Let the boozy brunch begin!
All kidding aside, the ad campaign makes a case for the fine art of aging gracefully. And in order to age gracefully, you don’t have to have expensive bags and shiny shoes, but you do need to embrace your age spots, and your veiny hands and ankles. If you are blessed to live long enough to acquire these things, it is best to display them proudly as the physical manifestations of your life journey.
It is worth noting that these parts of the body are the most difficult to rejuvenate via plastic surgery and so most, with the exception of perhaps the most wealthy or the most vain, do not bother. Subsequently, it is rare to see an ad campaign focused on these body parts of people past a certain age, a sad reflection of fashion’s obsession with anti-aging and eternal youth. How refreshing to see natural aging up close and personal!
And of course, we must not forget the cat. Seemingly dressed-up by her owners with nowhere to go, our kitty heroine gets her reward after brunch, in the form of a dish of ice cream. Yes, cats can eat icecream! (…though experts suggest only very small amounts. We Googled it!). Intriguingly, cats don’t have sweet taste receptors, so they only like ice cream for the fat and the cream. On the other hand, we at The Impression love the taste of something sweet, and this ad campaign delivers in spades (pun intended).
