Loewe Weaves Collection Launches in Collaboration With Sotheby’s

Loewe’s Weaves Collection Marks First Luxury Fashion House To Consign With Sotheby’s

In its ongoing commitment to craft, Loewe launches its Weaves Collection in collaboration with Sotheby’s auction house. The project is a collection of unique, artisan crafted objects including Galician chestnut roasters, woven leather bags, baskets and accessories. The partnership makes Loewe the first major luxury fashion house to exclusively consign with the auction house.

Sotheby’s will be exhibiting a selection of seven artist-embellished chestnut roasters featuring experimental weaving techniques by artists Arko (Japan), Min Chen (China) and Laia Arqueros (Spain). The handmade pots, created by master potter Antonio Pereira and reinterpreted by these three artists, will be included in Sotheby’s Impressionist, Modern and Contemporary Art exhibit in New York from May 1st – 12th.

Across this whole project, what I hope that what comes through is the liveliness and expansiveness of contemporary craft, as well as its playfulness. I am proud we have created singular objects that rewire function through decoration, and the other way round.

— Jonathan Anderson, Creative Director of Loewe

84 chestnut roasters were given to artisans Idoia Cuesta and Belen Martinez from Spain and to artisans in Loewe’s own ateliers for them to experiment. The functionality of these objects has been twisted and turned, becoming abstract as discarded materials have gained new life. Many of the materials embellishing the roasters are surplus from past Loewe collections. As Anderson comments, ‘Authentic craft, for me, is sustainable.”

Craft has always been a main interest to Anderson, who has subsequently made it central to Loewe’s identity. The aim of the project being to push craft to the extreme while exploring new ways of bringing objects to life. The series of decorative objects, bags, and leather accessories reinvent traditional techniques to create something unexpected.

The pieces will be exhibited and sold on Sotheby’s Buy Now online marketplace, starting on May 1st. After the auction closes, the Loewe Weaves collection will be available at Loewe stores and loewe.com from May 27th. On June 2nd, 13 of the artisan chestnut roasters, as well as a selection of leather goods from the Loewe Weaves collection, will also be available on at a pop up located in the Luxury Room of Bergdorf Goodman on Fifth Avenue, with an accompanying window display.
