Review of Luisa Spagnoli Spring 2021 Ad Campaign by Photographer Giampaolo Sgura with Model Aurora Talarico
Aurora Talarico steps into the spotlight in a theatrical new campaign for Luisa Spagnoli. The model was lensed by photographer Giampaolo Sgura for the house’s Spring 2021 campaign, which channels a spirit of longing for adventure.
Taking his cue from the collection’s animal prints and functionally chic bodysuits, Sgura’s imagery imagines an internal world characterized by a yearning for the external world. In the short film, Talarico occupies a minimalist sitting room constructed like a theater set. Sgura uses projection to paint this set’s white walls with moving images of animals and deserts. The projection creates beautiful plays of light, allowing Talarico to dance delicately with her own shadow.
Sgura’s still photography is less conceptual, but still carries over some of the visual motifs of the film. He layers straightforward color portraits over stills of the black-and-white travel footage, creating a simultaneous sense of past, present, and future that harmonizes nicely with the film’s spirit of adventure and possibility.
We can read the imagery as a well-timed portrait of the feeling of longing and excitement that characterizes our present moment of hesitant return to the world after the pandemic. At the same time, the feelings of hope and adventure conveyed in the film feel timelessly human. The campaign thus feels like an inspiring ode to personal discovery and rediscovery, and has us excited to dance our way back into the world.
