Review of Mary Katrantzou X Bulgari 2021 Ad Campaign by Photographer Hugo Comte with model Natalia Vodianova
The iconic Bulgari Serpenti undergoes another transformation through the skillful hands of Mary Katrantzou. The Greek designer channels mythology and metamorphosis for a collaborative Spring 2021 collection and its campaign.
Katrantzou first collaborated with Bulgari when the jewelry house lent pieces to the designers runway show staged at Athens’ temple of Poseidon in October of 2019. This new collaborative collection has been under patient development since then, and again taps into the cultural wealth of Katrantzou’s Greek heritage.
Referencing the serpent’s role in classical Greek and Roman myth, where it is revered for its ability to renew itself through shedding its skin, the collection explores a motif of metamorphosis. With beautiful metal and jewel work that scintillates like snake scales in the light, the pieces of the collection feel like ancient treasures passed down and transformed through the ages. Beautiful metallic butterflies appear as well, another living creature which symbolizes transformation and renewal.
Hugo Comte’s campaign photographs of model Natalia Vodianova keep things clear and simple to let the designs shine (literally). Reflective black surfaces against white backgrounds suggest contrast and renewal. Katrantzou designed bespoke jeweled bodysuits specifically for the shoot, and these looks do brilliant work to tie the imagery all together. Gorgeously glittering like snake scales and butterfly wings, they hug the body as a second skin.
The capsule feels like a collaboration in the truest sense of the word: the two creative visions are synthesized holistically, with Katrantzou transforming the technical possibilities afforded her by Bulgari into a living creative world. Though they are in a sense drawn from the past, the themes of metamorphosis and renewal show themselves to be eternally relevant, and this campaign shows us in the present how beautiful these moments of transformation can be.
