Review of Peter Do Spring 2021 Ad Campaign by Photographer Yiru Wang with model Miayea
Peter Do sparks introspection and appreciation with a subtly beautiful new campaign. Photographer Yiru Wang captures model Miayea in the label’s Spring 2021 collection, which includes pieces from their recent collaboration with Medea.
The imagery explores a theme of poetic juxtaposition. Elements of everyday life – a road, shoes, plant life, a ladder – which Wang photographs with indiscriminate naturalness are situated in conversation with each other and with Miayea.
Miayea brings intriguing layers of personality; she seems at once vulnerable, intimate, confident, and confrontational. Freely flowing between feminine, masculine, and abstract spaces in between, Do’s designs deepen this unique sense of personality.
The campaign was shot in the Catskills, but there is no effort to distinguish or elevate the natural world. Wang captures all her images with the same natural intimacy and honesty, leaving it up to us to experience the emotionally nuanced content that arises from this disparate yet harmonious arrangement. Her work feels totally effortless, yet sublime.
With a thoughtful, selfless approach to image and identity, the campaign has us seeing the world around us – and ourselves – with new eyes.
