Review of Ralph Lauren Spring 2021 Ad Campaign by Photographer Lachlan Bailey with models Ash Foo, Dae Na, Felice Nova Noordhoff, and Tami Williams
Ralph Lauren pays tribute to the romance and drama of Hollywood’s golden age in a new Spring 2021 campaign, which features photography by Lachlan Bailey.
With its moody black-and-white shots, elegant resort setting, and throwback style, the imagery feels inspired by classic romances of Hollywood cinema, particularly Casablanca. Bailey’s portraits find a deep sense of intrigue and maybe even anxiety in the eyes of their characters as if they are mentally working through the tangles of some complicated love triangle. But this suggested complexity is buried beneath an air of refined elegance.
One interesting image has no models or clothes, but instead just depicts an exterior setting: even the palm trees of a tropical paradise take on a brooding aspect among the gloomy monochrome. It’s an unexpected but smart inclusion that deepens the mood and expands the world of the campaign.
The campaign finds a nice balance in that it doesn’t take itself too seriously, but also never strays into the realm of parody. It celebrates the melodrama of its source material but has fun while doing so, and the results form a sensitively realized visual world.
