Rick Owens returns with another expectedly unexpected collaboration, this time with iconic sportswear monolith Champion.
Aptly titled “Stripped Down,” the collaborative collection made its first appearance at Owens’ Paris Fashion Week SS20 show, and features the iconic designer turning his progressive eye on Champion staples such as hoodies, basketball shorts, sweatpants, and more. He makes use of his uniquely personal and innovative tailoring techniques to find cuts and combinations that feel equally inspired by ancient Greek bathhouse and industrial cybergoth aesthetics. The result is a cohesive collection that seems both to be grounded in its functional sportswear heritage and to transcend the distinction between form and function.
Reflecting on his formative years, Owens explains how the power of Champion’s logo informed the collaboration and his eponymous brand’s own logo. In his signature all-caps style, he states, “WHEN I STARTED MY LABEL IN THE ’90s, I HAND DREW MY LOGO AS A CROSS BETWEEN THE CHAMPION LOGO AND A JEAN PATOU PERFUME LABEL… I REMEMBER MY OLDER, COOLER COUSINS WEARING CHAMPION SWEATSHIRTS AND SHORTS IN THE SEVENTIES, CEMENTING THAT LOGO IN MY BRAIN…”
Now, the collaborative collection proudly features a combination of the Champion logo and Owens’ own, signaling the success of his own rise to coolness.
