Dries Van Noten’s LA Store Gets Fresh Paint By Artist Jason Burgess in Live Performance

Dries Van Noten’s LA Store Gets Experiential with Latest ‘Live’ Art Project

Dries Van Noten invited artist Jason Burgess to freshen up his Los Angeles boutique with some new paint, taking the store’s wall appeal to a whole new level.

Burgess created an entire new art piece on the walls of the store painting live during opening hours from December 9th until December 12th. Burgess created his artwork, from start to finish, directly on the wall in the ‘Sound & Vision’ area on the Men’s floor.

The performance was a continuation of the young artist collaboration with Dries Van Noten as he previoulsy teamed for the store opening in October 2020.

The function of an artwork is determined by its context. The context of the mural being the Dries Van Noten store, I started by exploring the designers early work and becoming acquainted with his methodology. Immediately it seemed that color, texture, and pattern were crucial elements of his process. Walking through the store, I also understood Dries’ vision of the space as an active, breathing, experiential place.”

Approaching the store is a sensually activating experience for the artist. The traffic down La Cienega Blvd, Norms the classic LA noir diner, the ambiguous appearance of the building, and finally the secret verdant passageway into the store.

In this state of reception a dramatic repetition of yellow called Burgess. The store’s yellow sign, the vintage Mercedes 280 in the parking lot and yellow furniture and details punctuating the visual experience of the space.

Keeping the architecture and site-specificity in mind, I gathered visual material from in and around my studio in the fashion district of DTLA,” recalls Burgess. A majority of the colors and marks are informed from layers of paint accumulated on the drop cloth in his studio. “The yellow, with my experience of the store, the brand, and the element of chance, an object randomly found, a yellow polypropylene shipping strap, beautiful and loaded with its own history.

My process is a dialogue between space, chance, the mark and the mediation of the screen,”

I photograph, layer, and edit the visual material until something unexpected happens and the material is sublimated into a sketch that transcends its parts.
