Roberto Cavalli unveils a new campaign which explores pattern and disruption in the everyday. The Fall 2020 campaign features film direction by Andrea Maccio and photography by Ola Rindal.
Cavalli first made a name for himself in the early 70’s through his innovative creation of patterns and print, and this approach still characterizes his work today. The Fall 2020 collection offers many beautiful examples of this practice, from shimmering metallic motifs to monochrome animal prints, from graphic design to beadwork.
Both the film and the photography portions wisely use a simple, neutral interior as their setting. Against this simple everyday backdrop, the visual strength of these prints becomes more apparent. They disrupt the nondescript background, yet form a harmonic repetition within themselves. Taking this aesthetic with the film’s motif of a ticking clock, the campaign becomes an exploration of the human tendency to fall into patterns – or feel a need to break them – whether we are aware of it or not.
Simple but subtle in its conception and execution, the campaign feels restful and refreshing. It finds beauty in the everyday, the in-between moments that form part of a meaningful sequence, even if we can’t see it yet.
