Rochambeau Spring 2018 Ad Campaign

Rochambeau | Spring 2018 Ad Campaign

New York City-based label Rochambeau exhibited its affinity for art and collaboration through collections with Mark Mothersbaugh and artist Yung Jake, and this season is no different. Rochambeau partnered with painter and sculptor Aaron Curry for the Spring 2018 collection and has released a new campaign to support the collection.

Rochambeau co-founders Laurence Chandler and Joshua Cooper have been fans of Curry and attended the artist’s Melt to Earth show at Lincoln Center in 2014. Though the duo became immersed in the Los Angeles-based artist’s work at that time, Two Sheets Thick, Curry’s exhibit at the David Kordansky Gallery in 2010 served as the inspiration behind the Spring 2018 collection.

“Aaron Curry is a brilliant painter and sculptor, and it was a dream scenario to reach out and have him be as equally excited to work with us,” said Chandler.

“He flew into NYC from his LA-based studio and we spent weeks together developing our SS18 collection, working in prints and collage that translated elements from his 2010 show into the collection that would go down the runway. We aligned over similar references – skateboarding, punk, comics and just a general push to create something wild together.”

The Spring 2018 campaign, much like the collection, combines Rochambeau’s downtown New York City world with Curry’s colorful, sci-fi and skate-inspired world. Each photo from the series is set on a rooftop to capture the grit of the city, and feature out-of-this-world illustrations overlaid on each model. The art is absurd yet captivating, and adds a dimension to each image.

The campaign came together very naturally according to Chandler. The design duo sent Curry photos of the collection on model, and Curry treated the images on his own while on a trip to Tokyo.

“Aaron has an incredible hand style, and the insanity of the images led to an easy decision to make our campaign imagery,” explained Chandler.

The relationship between art and fashion goes back decades, but rather than have art and artists serve as inspiration, the design duo have created a fully collaborative experience that involves total immersion. Curry, Mothersbaugh, and Yung Jake have each brought something new and different to the label, making every collection from Rochambeau a fresh and exciting endeavor.

In regards to the label’s most recent collaborations, Chandler said, “Yung Jake is an incredibly talented artist tapping into realms like digital, music and sculpture – but with a wildly identifiable style. That same uniqueness carried over in getting to create with Aaron, understanding parts of his creative process, and translating that into the collection.”
