For its Fall 2018 campaign, Saint Laurent turned to the fresh-faced visionary that is Kaia Gerber and lensman David Sims to portray designer Anthony Vaccarello’s rocking vision for the house.
While the campaign has the typical Saint Laurent elements of an edgy vibe styled by Alastair McKimm, it was the campaign video that caught The Impression’s ear as the backing track to Kaia sporting a rocking Mongolian Lamb fur coat is ‘Venus in Furs’ by The Velvet Underground. An apropos pick given the talent and the product, yet in a day when other houses are walking away from fur the idea of highlighting it via a song choice feel so … dare we say, punk.
We can’t tell if Sims and Vaccarello are having a bit of a wink or made the choice before recent houses such as Versace, Tom Ford, and Maison Margiela announced they weren’t using fur anymore.
Despite the timing irony of the campaign’s fur-prominence, Saint Laurent put forth yet another immensely beautiful campaign that glorifies its Fall 2018 collection in a fitting rather rocker-chic manner. Venus indeed.
