Saint Laurent teams with Vanessa Beecroft for Art Basel
Saint Laurent’s Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello has always had a passion for self-expression and fashion’s ability to be intelligent and sexy without limitations. So it is only fitting that the designer has teamed with performance artist Vanessa Beecroft to collaborate on a project for Miami’s Art Basel entitled SELF02.
Beecroft, the Italian artist who now works out of the US, is knows for framing the female form as a point of confrontation, often addressing social issues. She traditionally lenses large group shots of frozen-in-place females, often nude or nearly so.
For her collaboration with Vaccarello and the house of Saint Laurent, SELF02, which will be on view this Saturday through December 15th, features a series of large-scale portraits by Beecroft, taken immediately after Saint Laurent’s Spring 2019 show. The project is designed to be an artistic commentary on society while emphasizing the core values of Saint Laurent. With their slicked-back hair, towering heels and empowered stances, set against the backdrop of the Eiffel Tower while flanked by white palm trees, the images are certainly captivating. And certainly aligned with The Impression’s current weekly series question of ‘Does sex still sell?’. It also begs the question of how is sex released to the ideals of self empowerment and how a brand aligns with those ideals.
Art is always a barometer of our times and it would appear for Saint Laurent and Anthony Vaccarello, today’s atmosphere is quite hot.
