Review of Self-Portrait “Silent Sea” Spring 2021 Ad Campaign by Photographer Marco van Rijt with Model Juliane Grüner
Self-Portrait slices into summer with a calmly beautiful new campaign for Spring 2021. Titled “Silent Sea,” the campaign features photographer Marco van Rijt lensing model Juliane Grüner.
The campaign was shot on the rocky shore of Bornholm, an island off the coast of Denmark. The interplay of solidity and fluidity between the craggy, eroded rock formations and the sea gives van Rijt ample opportunity to play with texture, light, and shadow. His black-and-white portraits find an artful interplay between the collection’s silhouettes and the shape of the landscape. Meanwhile, his color photographs feel more candid and draw out a spontaneous sense of summer’s emotional spectrum. The colors of pomegranates and golden-hued moss add beautiful touches of natural beauty.
Strong art direction illuminates a few of the images with blocks of text, which capture both the aesthetic character of the image and the anticipatory feelings of summer outdoors that it represents.
True to its name, Self-Portrait seems to reveal the interior landscape of our own souls: quietly joyful in our readiness to once again feel the warmth of the sun.
