The Life Aquatic caught the attention of a number of designers this season blending literal references of the sea with figurative ones in what The Impression is dubbing ‘Fashion Shark Week.’ Both with a wink and an ‘a-ha’ nod of ‘how true.’
The idea came to mind in New York as Raf Simons kept us all wondering what danger lied beneath the surface at Calvin Klein 205W39NYC as models strode the catwalk in tees riffing on the iconic 70s film Jaws and pleated, jaw marked, torn skirts. The mood combined the hysterics of the shark infested horror film with the hysterical red colored hats from Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic, a nod to the knitted caps worn by adventurer Jacques Cousteau.
In Europe designers rode a second wave to ‘Fashion Shark Week’ with stiff, micro pleated appendages that where more dorsal fin than accessory. Olivier Rousteing at Balmain and Clare Waight Keller at Givenchy both offered the look with a high tide as models peeked out behind the full fins to show that they too could bite.
Overall the trend displayed a sense of power and unpredictable entry that made Fashion Shark Week a must tune into event.
