Sterling Ruby dipped his toes in the fashion pool
through collaborations with Raf Simons, but this June the American artist steps
out on his own with his new label S.R. Studio. LA. CA.
Ruby is debuting a menswear and womenswear ready-to-wear and accessories collection at Pitti Uomo 96 as Special Guest of the trade fair. The collection is an extension of the Los Angeles-based artist’s artworks, such as quilts, backdrops, sculptures, and garments.
I’ve always been interested in the behavioral power that comes with clothing. For years I have been privately exploring garments as a medium, as something that impacts the way one can think, feel, and move. I couldn’t be more excited to finally put my clothing out into the world.
– Sterling Ruby
Though Ruby experimented with garments in private, he is regarded for his public fashion works with Raf Simons. Ruby collaborated with Simons on the Raf Simons FW14 collection and on Simons’ debut collection for Dior, which was the subject for the “Dior & I” documentary.
“We have been very interested in the work of the artist Sterling Ruby for a long time,” said Lapo Cianchi, Pitti Immagine’s Director of Communication and Events.
which are suspended between different areas with, at the center, a
heterogeneous project dedicated to reinterpreting American workwear. This alone
would be enough to justify Pitti Uomo’s invitation to host the debut of the
collection that will convey the project on to the fashion market. But Sterling
Ruby is also one of the protagonists of the powerful and creative Los Angeles
artistic scene that still moves between a thrust towards experimentation free
from the burdens of success and competition and an adherence to industrial
models of cinema, music, entertainment…and, naturally, fashion.”
S.R. Studio. LA. CA. will debut in Florence at an
event June 13, 2019.
