Sunnei lifts the curtains on a new campaign – although a good deal of it still remains hidden. The Spring 2021 campaign features delightfully mysterious photography by Andrea Artemisio.

Led by co-founders and creative directors Loris Messina and Simone Rizzo, Sunnei is bringing a disruptively youthful sensibility to the more traditionally focused Milan fashion scene – though their work does still exhibit an undeniable sense for the classics.

Artemisio’s campaign imagery is at once surreal, humorous, and ominous. Beneath Vittoria Cerciello’s slick styling work, each model wears an all-over, skin-tight green spandex bodysuit. Standing in a green-screened studio space, they are at risk of becoming one with the background.

Thus the imagery creates an intriguing tension of identity and a lack thereof. Though these people express personality through body language and the clothing they wear, the individuality of their bodies themselves is covered over. There is also a sense of uneasiness that the green screen could be activated at any point, further obliterating these identities as they are absorbed into an image.

In just a few of the photographs, we see an ear or a nose peeking out from all the green, which deepens the mystery by teasing us with the recognizably human. Like a Magritte painting or a Lynch film, the few bits of familiarity we do have to ground us become even more alluringly mysterious through their position among a vast unknown.

Enigmatic and artful, the campaign combines clean, striking visuals with a brilliant conceptual open-endedness. We can see its exploration of identity as a criticism of the industry’s tendency to replace individuality with image, a wider examination of what it means to see and be seen, and much more. Sunnei’s effortless brilliance is sure to make the rest of Milan green with envy.
