Tommy Hilfiger And Patta Collaborate on Capsule To Empower The Diaspora Movement

PattaXTommy Champions The African Diaspora Movement With The Message ‘Unity Is Strength, Division Is Weakness’

Tommy Hilfiger and Amsterdam-based streetwear brand, Patta, release the Spring 2021 PattaXTommy capsule, capturing the strength and influence of the African diaspora movement with the message “unity is strength, division is weakness.” Two short films, “Two Become One” and “Katibo Yeye”, have been produced in conjunction with the launch, to further the campaign’s directive.

The PattaxTommy campaign aims to shine a light on the multifaceted nature of life in inner cities. The short film “Two Become One” was filmed in Lagos, Nigeria, by Nigerian filmmaker Dafe Oboro. Oboro, born in one of the country’s largest slums, has now made a career of documenting the communities of the same streets. Photographs for the campaign were shot by visual artist Hassan Hajjaj, referred to as Morocco’s Andy Warhol.

To further call attention to the collection’s message, Patta has produced “Katibo Yeye,” a documentary directed by award-winning Dutch film director Frank Zichem. The film follows Clarence Breeveld, a Suriname-born man living in the Netherlands. He attempts to trace the shipping route from Ghana to Suriname traveled by his enslaved ancestors visiting locations where slave trading took place. “Katibo Yeye” will be available to watch at for a limited time only.

Amsterdam-based streetwear brand, Patta, was founded in 2004 by friends and business partners Edson Sabaio and Guillaume ‘Gee” Schmidt, both prominent figures in the Dutch Hip-hop scene in the ’90s and early 2000s. Since its establishment, the founding team has traveled the world sourcing the coolest streetwear not yet available to the Dutch public. The duo follows a mantra of existing out of love and necessity rather than profit and novelty.

Collaborating for the first time, Patta and Tommy Hilfiger centered the PattaXTommy capsule around the Pan-African Flag, Black unity, and community. Tommy’s iconic white, red and blue colors have been replaced by the traditional Pan-African colors of deep red, black, green, and yellow, putting African culture and community self-actualization front and center in this collection.

The unisex PattaxTommy collection itself is inspired by a series of iconic pieces from the Tommy archive available in adult and kid’s sizes, composed of T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, outerwear, jeans, and baseball caps. T-Shirts feature the diaspora message, “Great principles, great ideals know no nationality.” Across the line, a hybrid Tommy Jeans flag is crossed with a Pan-African flag, which sits above the Patta logo and capsule theme of ‘Unity is strength division is weakness.’

To further build on their work to drive awareness, education, and empowerment of the African diaspora movement partners Tommy Hilfiger and Patta will donate to The Black Archives from Amsterdam, Sistah Space from London, and The Good Neighborhood Collective from Milan – each chosen for their dedication to celebrating Afro-descendants and uplifting their voices.

The PattaXTommy collaboration will be available via the Patta retail network and beginning Friday, April 9, 2021, and via selected wholesale partners starting April 16, 2021.
