Review of Tommy Hilfiger x Romeo Hunte Fall 2021 Ad Campaign by Creative Director Trent Wisehart with Photographer Ronan McKenzie with models Ikram Abdi Omar, Aaliyah Hydes, Hidetatsu Takeuchi and Babacar N’Doye
Tommy Hilfiger teams up with his long-time mentee Romeo Hunte for a colorful new capsule. The collection is celebrated in a campaign by creative director Trent Wisehart and photographer Ronan McKenzie.
The collaborative and entirely unisex collection draws on classic pieces from Tommy Hilfiger’s archives, mashing up iconic examples of Tommy’s American prep with Romeo Hunte’s penchant for experimental construction and combination, and doing it all with bright, bold blasts of color.
Tommy has been such a supportive mentor to me over the years. Reinvention is a fundamental part of my design DNA, so pushing the boundaries of the brand’s archives has been an incredibly creative and meaningful experience. We also wanted to take this concept further, challenging the status quo from the design process to the campaign and the crew to re-imagine and redefine the future. I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved and hope to inspire the next generation of talent to dream big.

McKenzie captures the collection in a series of bright portraits, whose colorful backgrounds amplify the already dazzlingly chromatic character of the designs. Shot in London and starring an all-Black cast of natives to the city, the campaign further aligns with Tommy Hilfiger’s People’s Place program, which creates an opportunity for creative talent from underrepresented BIPOC communities and increases visibility to foster a diverse and inclusive community both in front of and behind, the camera.
The imagery is further brought to life by street artists Annan Afotey and Uzo Njoku in London and Brooklyn. Each artist has created a large-scale mural installation across the side of a prominent building, expanding on the campaign imagery and creatively tying in Romeo Hunte’s six-square logo. The QR codes are a smart way to actively invite passersby deep into the creative worlds behind the collaboration.
The collection is a bold fusion of the two designers’ divergent yet compatible creative visions, and the campaign does great work to actively bring its spirit out among the colors of the world.
