Opens a Test-Hub For Repairing And Recycling at Darwin Centre
Located on the Quai des Queyries, between the Pont de Pierre and the Chaban-Delmas bridge, in Bordeaux, Darwin occupies 10,000 m2 on the site of a former military barracks which was once abandoned.
Fusing art, work, sport, and food the Darwin Centre opened in 2009 and draws a million visitors a year, hosting renowned speakers such as anthropologist Jane Goodall, and it’s very own skatepark. The site also provides working space for hundreds of local startups and offers the largest organic restaurant in France, spaces for graffiti artists, an organic grocery store, as well as studio space for artists. In whole the space brings together 50 associations and 200 companies, breaking the traditional ways of integrating art, commerce, culture, work, and sport.
Veja chose the hybrid place to launch its new project: a store to clean, repair, and recycle your old pairs of shoes which fits into the philosophy of the brand. Since 2005, Veja has been creating sneakers differently, mixing social projects, economic justice, and ecological materials. The Veja x Darwin shop’s goal is to use the space as a test in a laboratory and invent the store of the future. A shoemaker’s workshop will repair and clean worn pairs of sneakers, while those in poor condition will be collected and recycled.
