The collaboration between Rick Owens and Veja co-founders Sébastien Kopp and François-Ghislain Morillion continues with Veja x Rick Owens sneakers. A study in minimalist sustainability, these are shoes that consumers can feel good about not only due to their unique and versatile aesthetic, but also because they challenge the contemporary fashion system through their innovative materials.
Dystopian sensibilities find glimmers of hope through Kopp and Morillion’s studies in sustainability, as they are merged with Owens’ unique universe. The riveting result is a runner made of seamless “3D wool” made of 58% wool from Uruguay, 25% recycled polyester, and 17% polyester, with shoe details based on castor and vegetable oil to reduce the use of plastic. The sole and insole are made with a mixture of reused and natural materials: recycled plastic bottles, and rubber extracted using traditional methods from the Amazon rainforest. The second shoe option is a vegan trekking model with an upper made of scraps derived from corn processing, as an alternative to leather which also reduces the use of petroleum-based elements.
The ad campaign is just as smart and spare as the shoes themselves, featuring a male and female model with long unkempt locks, who are barely distinguishable from one another save for the former’s hairy yet shapely legs. Finding a sustainable option for running shoes is one of the biggest challenges for eco-warriors today, and now they have multiple options, and can do it in style.
