Cast First Ever Transgender Model Valentina Sampaio

Victoria’s Secret has recognized the moment by casting its first-ever transgender model, Valentina Sampaio, a 22-year-old model hailing from Brazil. Sampaio will be starring in the Victoria’s Secret Pink Line campaign—only a short couple years after becoming the first trans woman to be on the cover of Vogue Paris in 2017, and a cover model for Vogue Paris in 2018.

In 2018, Victoria’s Secret Chief Marketing Officer Ed Razek, who deserves credit for driving the brand to its global popularity, caused a sensation with his comment about not including trans models in Victoria’s Secret fashion shows. He claimed that “transsexual” models should not be cast “because the show is fantasy.”  Victoria’s Secret models Karlie Kloss and Lily Aldridge clapped back online, stating that trans and gender non-conforming lives are not up for debate. Yesterday Ed Razek stepped down from his role to retire. So it would appear that Sampaio is ushering in a new era for the retailer.

Erio Zanon, Sampaio’s agent says that her hiring for Victoria’s Secret catalog is a great opportunity to break barriers. And indeed, those barriers are being broken every day. Just as Kloss and Aldridge made public, LGBT lives are not up for debate. Valentina Sampaio is making bold moves, showing Victoria’s Secret and the rest of the world what fashion and fantasy is really about.
